Trump Doesn’t Need Putin to Betray America—He Did It Himself

Donald Trump is neither the Russian puppet critics frequently portray, nor the staunch patriot his supporters passionately claim. Instead, he occupies a far more dangerous middle ground – driven first and foremost by personal interest. Many people would submit that Trump is “transactional,” but too few people can articulate what this means or how it impacts American interests now. This nuanced reality makes Trump uniquely dangerous, not because he’s easily manipulated or controlled by foreign leaders, but because adversaries only need to incentivize him personally to have him go along with things which are devastating for our country.

The Myth of the Puppet and Patriot

First Image Second Image

Critics often simplify Trump’s relationship with Vladimir Putin, labeling him Putin’s puppet. This narrative assumes Trump is either unintelligent or easily manipulated, leaving him vulnerable to Russian coercion or blackmail. Though Trump frequently says and does dumb things, he is not a moron. He makes blunders, sure. You don’t have to think of him as a talented or capable business person either. The fact is he continues to align himself with power, and take center stage in international affairs. He is the President of the United States (again) after all. Nobody would confuse Joe Biden as a Mensa member, either, but both of these men are just smart enough to be in the big seat.

Conversely, Trump’s staunchest defenders see him as shrewdly patriotic – too smart and strong-willed to fall victim to foreign manipulation. Both views fundamentally misunderstand the reality.

Trump’s true danger to America is that he requires neither coercion nor ideological alignment to betray national interests. His sole requirement is the perception that something benefits him personally. This may be financial or political – but ultimately it is self-centered. Thus, the betrayal is more subtle and harder to detect.

Self-Interest as National Betrayal

Trump’s decisions consistently prioritize his own benefit, even now when such actions conflict directly with America’s broader welfare. Consider Ukraine. Critics look for overt treason, imagining Trump secretly negotiating with Putin to undermine the U.S. But no direct conspiracy was needed. Trump simply pursued personal and transactional interests that naturally aligned with Putin’s strategic objectives. That’s why they appear allied. That is also why Trump is now steering American interests closer to Russia’s.

When Trump proposes leveraging Ukraine’s desperate position to gain mineral and resource rights for American companies it is more likely for himself personally. He isn’t simply negotiating tough. He’s signaling clearly that his personal interests outrank genuine U.S. strategic, moral, and ethical commitments. Trump isn’t dumb; he’s indifferent to consequences that don’t affect him directly.

Accountability is Impossible Without Understanding

The oversimplified narrative of Trump as either a puppet or patriot has actively hindered true accountability. Critics, hoping to embarrass or shame Trump into accountability, misrepresent the true nature of his brand of betrayal.

This makes accusations easy to dismiss and true damage hard to pinpoint. Trump comfortably rejects claims of overt collusion precisely because they aren’t true. So do his followers. If they were capable of seeing what is truly happening though, many of them would change their stance on supporting him. At the end of the day, if Trump is not impeached and removed from office, this kind of corruption will take root in our society. That would be total devastation. Would that outcome please Putin? Probably. But that doesn’t mean he is directly responsible for it. Blaming a foreign adversary for taking actions advantageous to their own country and detrimental to ours is not even something to criticize. Putin has no loyalty or expectation to be supportive of America. That’s why casting aspersions at Putin does absolutely nothing to weaken his negotiating posture or to drive him further apart from being aligned with Trump. It is not even overtly bad to have positive relations with Russia. It’s just these circumstances are untenable.

True accountability begins only once America recognizes that Trump doesn’t require trickery or manipulation to betray the nation’s interests. He needs only opportunity, incentive, and the assurance that people won’t notice – or won’t care. For Trump, betrayal isn’t an emotional or ideological choice. It’s simply a logical transaction.

Trump’s Real Danger to America

Trump’s danger lies precisely in how he breaks our traditional understanding of betrayal. He isn’t against America, at least not intentionally. He simply values himself more than he values America.

And in that calculation is America’s greatest threat.

Trump doesn’t have to be Putin’s puppet to sell out America’s interests.

He never had our interests at heart to begin with.
